Vietnam has evolved into one of the world’s most active mobile game development markets. But the real story isn’t just about downloads. It’s about how the industry is developing.
Vietnam has earned a reputation as a mobile gaming powerhouse. In 2025, the country ranked as the second-largest exporter of mobile games by downloads, with nearly 5 billion downloads generated by Vietnamese studios. Those numbers are impressive, but they only tell part of the story.
During a recent episode of Tenjin ROI 101, Maxon Pugovsky, Growth & Partnerships Lead at Point2Web, shared a broader perspective on Vietnam’s gaming ecosystem. Beyond the download numbers, he highlighted a market that’s maturing quickly, attracting international investment, and shifting its focus from scale to sustainable growth.
Here are five trends shaping Vietnam’s next chapter in mobile gaming.
1. The Focus is Shifting From Downloads to Revenue
Vietnam built its reputation on producing games at scale and for years many studios found success with hypercasual titles that generated millions of downloads, particularly in Android-first markets. That approach has helped establish Vietnam become one of the world’s leading exporters of mobile games.
Today, however, the industry recognizes that download volume alone isn’t enough.
As Maxon explained:
“Vietnamese studios understand that they need to transition from download scale to revenue scale. They want to get more from each download they generate.”
That shift is driving many developers toward hybrid-casual experiences with deeper gameplay, stronger progression systems, and better long-term monetization.
It’s a natural evolution that mirrors broader trends across the mobile gaming industry. As user acquisition becomes more competitive and advertising revenues fluctuate, increasing player lifetime value has become a priority for studios worldwide.
2. Founder-Led Studios Shape the Ecosystem
One of Vietnam’s defining characteristics is how many successful studios remain independently owned.
Following the success of Flappy Bird, a wave of developers left established companies to build their own studios. Thanks to Vietnam’s relatively low cost of living, many founders were able to bootstrap their businesses without relying on venture capital.
According to Maxon:
“The founders owned the companies. They didn’t need to report to investors. They didn’t need to chase an exit.”
That mindset still influences the industry today.
Rather than building companies to sell, many founders are focused on sustainable growth and long-term product development. Even when investment opportunities arise, maintaining creative control often remains a priority.
3. International Partnerships are More Important Than Funding
Investment activity in Vietnam is increasing, but capital isn’t the only thing studios are looking for.
Maxon highlighted two notable milestones: Panthera Global’s seed investment and NCSoft’s acquisition of a majority stake in Lihuhu Games. Both signal growing international confidence in Vietnam’s game development ecosystem.
More importantly, they illustrate what many founders value most.
As Maxon explained, many studios aren’t simply looking for financial investment. They’re looking for partners who can bring expertise in game design, monetization, publishing, and live operations.
That creates opportunities for publishers, technology providers, and experienced game companies to contribute knowledge alongside capital.
4. The Next Challenge is Building Deeper Games
Vietnamese studios have developed strong production capabilities over the past decade.
They’re known for moving quickly, iterating on successful ideas, and building efficient development pipelines.
The next step is creating games with richer player experiences.
Maxon described the challenge this way:
“The next challenge is creating games with deeper gameplay, stronger progression systems, richer meta layers, more original mechanics, and more original stories.”
And this transition is already underway.
Many studios that previously focused on hypercasual games are expanding into hybrid-casual, puzzle, and other genres that require stronger retention systems and more sophisticated design.
For international partners, this also creates opportunities for knowledge sharing in areas such as game design, product management, live operations, and monetization.
5. Vietnam is More Than an Outsourcing Destination
Vietnam continues to play an important role in global game production through outsourcing. However, as many might presume, this is no longer the country’s defining characteristic.
Today, Vietnam has quite a mature publishing ecosystem with experienced user acquisition teams, and a growing number of studios developing original IP for global audiences.
As Maxon noted, many companies are also expanding beyond games into utility applications and new digital products, reflecting a broader maturation of the technology ecosystem. Usually these utility and non-gaming apps are the main focus while gaming apps take the passenger seat.
The result is a market that’s increasingly diverse, ambitious, and internationally connected.
What’s Ahead
Vietnam’s success has never been defined by a single viral game or one breakthrough studio.
Instead, it has been built through thousands of developers, hundreds of independent studios, and a willingness to adapt as the market evolves.
The industry’s next phase won’t simply be measured by download numbers. Rather, it will be measured by stronger monetization processes, the ability to create meaningful and deeper gameplay, while developing more strategic partnerships. It’s these attributes that will allow the ecosystem to compete at the highest level of global mobile gaming.
For publishers, developers, and growth teams, Vietnam is no longer just a market to watch. It’s a market to learn from.
