Subscription App Models: Free Trial vs. Freemium vs. Paid

Every subscription app eventually asks the same question: how much should we give away before we ask someone to pay? Get it right, and the app builds a steady base of subscribers who stick around. Get it wrong, and user acquisition (UA) teams end up chasing installs that never turn into revenue.

However, that question is bigger than product design itself. The subscription model an app chooses: free trial, freemium, or paid subscription, also shapes the kind of user it attracts. It extends to the types of promises its ads have to make, and the time it takes to know whether a UA campaign is actually working. Two apps can spend the same budget on the same channels and walk away with completely different answers, simply because their access models create different paths to payment.

This guide breaks down what separates the three models, how each one changes mobile user acquisition, and which subscription metrics UA and growth teams need to track to know whether their campaigns are creating durable revenue, beyond installs.

What Is the Difference Between a Free Trial, Freemium, and a Paid Subscription?

The simplest way to understand the three models is to separate an offer from an access model.

For example, a free trial is an offer. It gives a user a limited window to experience premium features before a paid subscription begins, unless they cancel. A language-learning app might give someone seven days of full access before charging for an annual plan.

For example, a photo-editing app might offer basic tools for free, then require a subscription for unlimited exports and advanced effects.

It can still include a trial, a discounted first period, or a limited preview. Those offers do not make the product freemium.

It’s important to note that a fully free app is different from a freemium model. A fully free app provides ongoing access without a required subscription and most likely monetizes through in-app advertising (IAA), in-app purchases (IAP), commerce, partnerships, or a mixed (hybrid) monetization model of those types. If there is no upgrade path to a subscription, then lifecycle subscription metrics will not be part of its main performance view.

It is also worth avoiding the phrase “free subscription model.” This can refer to a permanent free plan or a time-limited free trial and they represent two very different user journeys. For our purposes, in this article, free tier 或 free plan means ongoing access; free trial means temporary premium access.

Subscription Models Relate to UA Objectives

With a free trial, ads need to set up the value users will experience quickly. A campaign may successfully generate trial starts because the offer has low friction, but that does not mean it has found the right audience. If users start a trial and cancel before the first charge, the campaign has created activity without creating much revenue.

使用 freemium, the journey is usually longer. A user might install because the free tier solves an immediate problem, then upgrade only after they reach a limit or see a reason to pay. That makes free-user volume a weak proxy for value. A channel that produces fewer installs may be more valuable if its users are more likely to engage, reach the paywall, and subscribe later.

With a paid subscription model, the commercial moment comes earlier, but subscriber quality still takes time to prove. A campaign driving affordable annual subscriptions may look strong on day one. A second campaign with a higher cost per install could be better if its subscribers renew more consistently. First payments matter, but they are not the whole return-on-ad-spend story.

This is why subscription apps should align the promise in their creative with the experience after install. If an ad suggests instant access to one type of value but the paywall, product, or trial experience suggests another, cancellations can rise even when trial volume looks healthy.

How to Choose a Subscription Model for Your App

There is no universally best mobile app subscription model. The right one depends on the nature of the product, how quickly people experience its value, and what the business can sustainably give away.

Start with five practical questions:

1. Is the value recurring?
   Subscriptions are strongest when users have a reason to come back. That translates to promoting new content, ongoing coaching, personalized insights, regular utility, or a service they rely on continuously.
   
2. Do users need time to understand the product?
   A free trial can help when the value only becomes clear after several sessions. But a trial should be long enough for users to experience that value, not simply long enough to increase trial starts. For example, a lot of health apps require time for a user to get to know the product and see potential benefits.
   
3. Can a free tier be useful without replacing the paid product?
   A freemium tier can support reach and product discovery. It also has a cost: free users consume support, infrastructure, and product attention. The upgrade path must be clear.
   
4. What is the job and main purpose of the paywall?
   It should sit after a meaningful value moment, not merely block the user before they understand why premium access matters.
   
5. Can the team measure downstream value by acquisition source?
   Without a clear funnel, it is easy to optimize toward the cheapest install, the highest trial volume, or the most first-time subscriptions, even when another campaign is generating better long-term revenue.

All of these questions should be considered when choosing the best sort of subscription model for your app. A subscription model is only as useful as the measurement framework behind it.

Why Trial Starts and New Subscriptions Are Not Enough

Trial starts and new subscriptions are important. They indicate that a campaign can move users into the paid journey. But they do not reveal whether those users will remain valuable after their first decision.

Consider two acquisition campaigns for the same app. Campaign A generates 1,000 trials at a lower cost, while Campaign B generates 700 trials at a higher cost. If Campaign A’s users cancel before renewal and Campaign B’s users continue paying, Campaign B may create more revenue despite its weaker top-of-funnel numbers.

The same applies to first-time paid subscriptions. One channel may generate many monthly subscribers during a promotion, while another brings in fewer annual subscribers who renew at a stronger rate. Looking only at new subscribers can hide that difference.

Subscription measurement needs to answer three related questions:

• Conversion quality
  Which campaigns bring in users who start a trial or subscribe?

  Which campaigns bring in users who renew rather than cancel?
  
• Revenue quality
  Which campaigns create the most subscription revenue over time?

These questions matter whether the app uses a trial, freemium, or direct paid model. The journey may begin in different places, but the growth goal is the same: acquire users whose subscription value exceeds the cost of acquiring them.

For a trial-led app, this is an early signal, not a final result. Use it to see where initial intent comes from, then compare it with new subscriptions, cancellations, and renewals to understand whether that intent turns into lasting value.

New Subscriptions shows first-time paid subscriptions. These may come from users who convert after a trial or users who subscribe directly.

This metric is useful for understanding first conversion, especially when comparing paywall offers or acquisition sources. It should still be read alongside renewals — a campaign is not necessarily valuable just because it drives a large number of first payments.

New Subscription Revenue measures revenue from first paid subscriptions. It gives important context that subscriber counts cannot provide on their own.

For example, a campaign driving annual subscriptions can generate more immediate revenue than one that drives monthly subscriptions, even if both generate the same number of new subscribers. Analyzing by Product ID can help teams see how different plans, tiers, or offers contribute to that result.

续费 show the number of subscriptions that continue into another billing period. It is one of the clearest indicators that users are receiving enough ongoing value to keep paying.

Renewals are especially important when comparing campaign quality. A source that generates fewer initial subscriptions may still be the stronger investment if the subscribers it acquires continue at a higher rate.

续费收入 measures revenue from subscribers who continue paying. It turns retention into a financial signal, making it easier to see whether acquisition activity is creating recurring value rather than only a first transaction.

This is where the MMP perspective matters. Renewal data becomes more actionable when it is connected to the campaign that acquired the subscriber. It helps teams evaluate whether a higher acquisition cost is justified by stronger downstream revenue.

Cancellations shows users who choose not to continue their subscription. A cancellation does not always mean access ends immediately — a user can turn off auto-renewal and retain access until the current paid period ends.

Even so, it is an important early warning signal. Higher cancellation activity from one campaign can indicate a mismatch between the audience, the creative promise, the offer, or the product experience. It is a cue to investigate, not proof of a single cause.

How to Calculate Total Subscription Revenue

The six metrics above describe the subscription lifecycle. To assess the revenue outcome of that lifecycle, combine the two revenue metrics:

Total Subscription Revenue = New Subscription Revenue + Renewal Revenue

Total Subscription Revenue is not a seventh event. It is an analysis metric that brings together the value from a user’s first payment and the value from continued payments.

This distinction is useful in practice. New Subscription Revenue helps identify campaigns creating immediate paid value. Renewal Revenue shows which campaigns are creating durable value. Looking at the combined figure lets teams compare the total subscription revenue generated by campaigns, channels, Product IDs, or markets instead of optimizing solely for first-time conversion.

It also gives better context for spend decisions. A campaign with a higher CPI or cost per trial may still be more efficient if its subscribers generate stronger total subscription revenue over time.

How to Measure Subscription Revenue by Campaign
