Many marketers still view mobile OEM advertising as a niche acquisition channel built around pre-installed apps, limited targeting, and difficult measurement. That perception no longer reflects how the channel works today.
Today, mobile OEM advertising includes app recommendations and advertisements delivered through manufacturer-owned app stores, device setup flows, browsers, launchers, notifications, and other native device surfaces. It gives app marketers another way to reach Android users beyond established social, search, and mobile ad networks.
To understand how the channel actually works, we spoke with Ashwin Shekhar, co-founder of mobile OEM advertising company AVOW, on the Tenjin ROI 101 podcast.
AVOW works across 13 mobile OEM partners and says its ecosystem reaches more than 1.85 billion daily active users, covers 86% of the global Android market, and generates more than 10 million monthly app installs for its clients.
Here are six of the most common mobile OEM advertising myths, and what app marketers should know before dismissing the channel.

What is Mobile OEM Advertising?
Mobile OEM advertising allows brands and app developers to advertise through the ecosystems of original equipment manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, vivo, HONOR, and Transsion.
Instead of relying exclusively on social platforms, search engines, or ads inside third-party apps, advertisers can reach users through surfaces controlled by the device manufacturer. These may include:
- Alternative app stores
- Device setup and out-of-box experiences
- App recommendation placements
- Native display ads
- Manufacturer-owned browsers
- Launchers and home-screen surfaces
- System notifications
- Dynamic preload campaigns
The available formats and targeting options differ by manufacturer, market, and campaign partner. Rather than operating as a single standardized ad network, mobile OEM advertising spans multiple channels owned by individual device manufacturers.
Myth 1: OEM Audiences are Too Small to Matter
Advertisers may see OEM inventory as too fragmented to scale, especially when they test only one manufacturer in one market. However, the broader ecosystem tells a different story.
AVOW reports that its combined OEM partnerships provide access to more than 1.85 billion daily active users and more than 10 million monthly app installs. The important word is combined. Advertisers achieve scale by working across the manufacturers that hold meaningful market share in each target country.
As Ashwin explains:
“Every market has a different mix of smartphone manufacturers, and each one has a different market share.”
A campaign focused exclusively on Xiaomi, for example, may perform well in markets where Xiaomi has a strong presence but struggle to reach the same scale elsewhere. Combining Xiaomi with manufacturers such as Samsung, OPPO, vivo, Huawei, HONOR, or Transsion creates a much larger addressable audience.
The takeaway is not that every OEM campaign automatically has enormous reach. It is that OEM scale depends on selecting the right manufacturer mix for each market.
Myth 2: Mobile OEM Advertising Only Works in Asia
Many major Android device manufacturers originated in China or South Korea. These manufacturers now reach audiences far beyond Asia.
Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Huawei, HONOR, and Transsion all operate internationally, although their relative market strength varies considerably by region.
According to AVOW, its OEM partners can currently reach up to:
- 57% of the mobile audience in Europe
- 55% in Latin America
- 87% in Southeast Asia
AVOW also reports substantial reach across India, Africa, the Middle East, and the CIS region. These figures represent AVOW’s available partner reach rather than the market share of one individual manufacturer.
This distinction matters. Mobile OEM advertising is not one Asian channel expanding into the rest of the world. It is a collection of regional manufacturer ecosystems, each with a different audience, inventory mix, and level of market penetration.
China remains a separate case. China’s fragmented mobile ecosystem operates differently from the Google Play-based Android markets found in most other countries. Advertisers entering China therefore need a strategy designed specifically for that market.
Outside China, OEM advertising can support campaigns across Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and other Android-heavy markets.
Myth 3: OEM Advertising is Just Another Name for Preloads
Factory preloads shaped the early perception of OEM advertising. In a traditional factory preload agreement, an app is installed on a device before it reaches the customer. The app may already be visible when the user first turns on the phone.
That format still exists, but it represents only one part of the modern OEM advertising ecosystem.
Common Mobile OEM Formats
Dynamic Preloads and Out-of-Box Recommendations
During device setup, OEMs can recommend or install apps dynamically based on the device, market, and campaign criteria, rather than relying on a fixed factory preload.
Google Play Auto-Install campaigns, also known as PAI campaigns, allow OEMs, carriers, and app discovery partners to preload or recommend apps when a device is first activated. Tenjin can attribute supported PAI campaigns using data passed through the Google Play Install Referrer.
Alternative App Stores
Manufacturers operate their own app stores, including Samsung Galaxy Store, Xiaomi GetApps, and Huawei AppGallery. Advertisers can use search placements, featured listings, recommendations, and promotional inventory to reach users outside Google Play.
Native Display Advertising
Ads can appear across manufacturer-owned surfaces such as browsers, launchers, app discovery feeds, and other parts of the device interface.
Branding Campaigns
Brands can use several OEM-controlled placements to reach the same audience at different points in the mobile experience. This makes OEM inventory relevant not only to app-install campaigns but also to broader awareness and consideration goals.
Factory preloads were part of the channel’s origin. They are not a complete description of what mobile OEM advertising offers today.
Myth 4: OEM Inventory Only Provides Basic Targeting
Another common assumption is that OEM targeting begins and ends with choosing a country and device manufacturer. Available targeting capabilities can be much more detailed. Depending on the OEM and partner, advertisers may be able to use signals such as:

AVOW describes its on-device targeting as using signals such as location, app usage, demographics, device type, and keywords. The exact data available and how it may be used will vary according to the manufacturer, market, consent framework, and applicable privacy requirements.
What is Appographic Targeting?
Appographic targeting groups or selects audiences based on the apps installed on their devices.
For example, a streaming service could potentially reach users who have installed a competing streaming app but not its own. A sports advertiser could focus on users who have installed live-score or sports-news apps.
Installed-app data becomes more useful when combined with behavioral signals. An installed sports app may indicate an interest, while recent usage and time spent can indicate how active that interest is.
As Ashwin explains:
“Ideally, you want to combine all three to reach the right user at the right time.”
This does not mean every OEM offers every targeting signal. Advertisers should confirm the available options with their OEM or aggregation partner before designing the campaign.
Myth 5: OEM Advertising Campaigns Cannot Be Reliably Tracked
OEM advertising is not automatically excluded from the standard mobile measurement ecosystem.
Advertisers can use a mobile measurement partner to attribute installs, measure post-install events, analyze revenue, and compare OEM campaign performance with other acquisition channels. The exact attribution method depends on the advertising format.
A click-based OEM placement may use campaign tracking links and callbacks. A preload or device-activation campaign may require a different attribution method.
For example, Google Play Auto-Install campaigns do not rely on a conventional ad click. The OEM or partner passes campaign information to Google Play, which Tenjin retrieves through the Google Play Install Referrer when the app is opened. Tenjin then uses that data to attribute the install. Supported partners listed in Tenjin’s PAI documentation include Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Huawei, HONOR, and Transsion.
This means OEM campaign results can be reported alongside social, search, and ad-network performance within an MMP. However, it would be misleading to say that every OEM format uses exactly the same attribution methodology as Meta or Google Ads.
The reporting destination may be the same. The technical route used to attribute the conversion may differ.
Is OEM Traffic Fraud-Free?
OEM-controlled placements can have a shorter supply chain than inventory purchased through several intermediaries. Ads may be served directly through environments controlled by the device manufacturer, which can improve transparency and brand safety.
However, advertisers should avoid describing any acquisition channel as universally fraud-free. Campaign quality should still be evaluated using attribution data, retention, post-install behavior, revenue, and return on ad spend.
The advantage is not that measurement becomes unnecessary. It is that OEM campaigns can be measured and evaluated using the same business outcomes as the rest of the acquisition mix.
Myth 6: Working with Multiple OEMs is Too Complicated
The OEM ecosystem is fragmented. Each manufacturer can have its own:
- Contract
- Minimum budget
- Available markets
- Advertising formats
- Campaign requirements
- Reporting process
- Technical setup
A growth team attempting to establish direct relationships with many manufacturers may face a significant operational burden.
Ashwin describes the challenge:
“You need to have paperwork to sign with each of these different OEMs. You need to put a considerable amount of budget into each one, and you don’t know how it’s going to work.”
This complexity is one reason advertisers work with OEM aggregation partners. An aggregator can provide access to several manufacturers through one commercial relationship and help determine which inventory, markets, and placements are most appropriate for each campaign.
As Ashwin explains:
“We act as a one-stop solution and aggregate all of the OEMs. Advertisers have a single point of contact, and we help them scale across the different partners.”
An aggregator does not remove the need for a mobile OEM advertising strategy. Advertisers must still choose which markets to enter, select formats that match their goals, set an appropriate budget, and define how they will measure success.
It does, however, reduce the administrative and operational work required to establish and maintain separate manufacturer relationships.
Should App Marketers Test Mobile OEM Advertising?
Mobile OEM advertising is most relevant to teams that want to:
- Diversify beyond social and search
- Reach additional Android audiences
- Expand in markets with strong OEM penetration
- Test alternative app-store acquisition
- Use device-native advertising placements
- Add new sources of app installs and post-install revenue
It should not be treated as a universal replacement for Meta, Google, TikTok, or established mobile ad networks. Its value depends on the app, market, manufacturer mix, campaign format, and measurement setup.
The more useful question is whether OEM inventory can give your app access to audiences or placements that your existing channel mix is not reaching efficiently.
For teams facing rising acquisition costs or limited room to scale through their established channels, that question is increasingly worth testing.

The goal is not to replace the channels that already work. It is to determine whether OEM advertising can add reach, diversification, and measurable growth to the wider user acquisition strategy.
