App subscriptions turn a one-time install into ongoing revenue, where users pay regularly (weekly, monthly, or yearly) for continued access to the app or premium features. For app publishers, subscription business models are particularly valuable. This is because a single successful acquisition produces recurring revenue, which is more predictable than one-time purchases or pure ad monetization. Acquiring subscribers can also generate higher lifetime value compared to paid downloads or встроенные покупки.
However, it’s hard to determine which users will stay engaged and keep on returning. Getting an установить is not the same as starting a trial. And, a new trial doesn’t always lead to a first payment. It’s unpredictable whether or not users will renew their subscription plan. That’s why subscription growth has to be measured within the context of the whole lifecycle.
In this guide, we’ll cover how different subscription business models work, which metrics to use, and how to connect subscriber value to user acquisition.
What is an App Subscription?
An app subscription is a type of in-app purchase (IAP) that provides access to an app and its services for a determined period of time or billing period. Users could pay weekly or monthly, annually, or along another timeline. In many cases, renewals occur automatically until the subscriber cancels or there’s an issue with payment.
Subscription plans can offer:
- Premium content
- Advanced features
- Higher usage limits
- Personalized recommendations
- Cloud storage or cross-devices services
- Ad-free experiences
- Early access to tools, levels, or other benefits
What makes a subscription different from a one-time purchase is the ongoing exchange and billing between the user and app publisher. The user doesn’t buy a permanent feature, but they choose to keep paying because the product and content is useful to them.
Retention is automatically built into the product. A strong paywall can create the first payment, but it only develops into renewal revenue if users continue seeing value.
How Do App Subscriptions Work?
Most subscription apps follow the same lifecycle:
- Discovery and install
User discovery happens in many ways: a paid campaign, organic search, an app store feature, a referral, or another acquisition source. - Subscription offer appears
The app shows a free trial, premium upgrade, or a paid plan. - Start of trial or paid subscription
A trial creates intent, while a first paid subscription creates new subscription revenue. - Next billing date
Payment success after a new subscription is considered a renewal. - Continuation, change, cancellation
The next action determines future revenue and long-term subscriber value
The subscription timeline has a lot of variation lasting anywhere from a day to several weeks, or months. A user might only want to subscribe after onboarding, or after reaching a usage limit, or only after trying out the app several times. But, timing measurement is everything when it comes to user acquisition. If a campaign is evaluated on same-day installs or trial starts, it can look successful before it has even had the chance to develop, mature.
Types of Subscription Business Models
The route to payment is guided by three main subscription models. The grid below outlines the different types, how the user benefits and the typical journey to revenue.
| Модель | User Benefit | Revenue Parth |
| Free trial | Temporary access to features | Trial converts into a paid subscription |
| «Фримиум» | Ongoing access to a limited free version | User upgrades when value becomes clear |
| Paid subscription | Access via recurring payments | User subscribes directly, sometimes after an offer |
| Гибридный | A mix of free access, ads, IAP, and subscription options | Different users monetize through different paths |
The best subscription business model for your app depends on how fast users understand your product, its value, and what services and features an app can sustainably offer at no cost. Some Apps Fit Subscription Models Better Than Others
Success subscription apps offer continuous value, rather than a one-off benefit. Some common examples are:
- Приложения для фитнеса и здорового образа жизни
- Coaching apps
- Инструменты для повышения производительности
- Education and language learning apps
- Apps with progressive and regularly updated content
- Media and entertainment
- Games with regular benefits, content, or membership features
Notice that the category matters a lot less than the value pattern. A subscription-based app needs to give users a very clear reason to return. They need to stay relevant, keep users engaged, and keep earning their value. Offering premium access to content, creating custom recommendations and the preservation of user data and progress are all great opportunities to tap into.
For those apps that focus on solving a one-time problem or have little value after purchase, then a different type of mobile app monetization: IAP, IAA or hybrid approach might be a better match.
Benefits to Subscription Business Models
More Predictable Revenue
Because subscriptions can generate recurring revenue across several billing periods, it gives publishers more insight into how revenue develops. Remember, predictable doesn’t equal a guarantee. It still depends on acquisition, conversion, retention, billing, and continued value. Renewals are what makes it possible to build beyond that first payment.
More Focus on Retention
One time IAP is tied to a short conversion moment. In contrast, subscriptions reward the entire customer experience: onboarding, content, product updates, support, pricing, and communication. Each of these elements affect whether or not a user will continue. It also creates a healthy incentive to continue improvements within the product to keep users engaged. There’s no one finish line to conversion.
Stronger Subscription LTV
Renewals generate more value than a one time IAP, which can also justify a higher acquisition cost. A campaign with a higher cost per install can be the better investment, especially in the long run. When users renew or choose higher-value services, the campaign can create stronger subscription LTV и ROAS overtime.
Flexible Monetization Mix
Subscriptions don’t have to be the only way to monetize. App publishers can combine subscription models with ads, one-time purchases, or consumable IAPs. A free audience watching ads might be the key to generating revenue, while a smaller group pays for premium access or goes completely ad-free.
Interpreting Subscription Growth
Subscriptions depend on удержание пользователей and sometimes the relationship on either side can become complex. Growth statistics aren’t always easy to interpret. Trials can hide conversions, new subscribers could drop out at the next payment, and campaign cohort maturity could get complicated with different renewal cycles. Below, we’ve outlined some of the most common growth measurement mistakes:
Trial Volume vs Conversions
There could be an offer that drives a high number of trials. However, a high volume could also mask the quality of users and there is no way of knowing if they will or not cancel before the initial billing date. If they did cancel, then the campaign has generated attention, rather than materializing into revenue.
Keep in mind that trials should be taken into account only as an early signal. As an early signal, it becomes more useful when it can be compared with new subscriptions, cancellations, and later renewals.
New Subscriptions vs Retention
A campaign can drive a lot of first payments, but fail in the long run. If subscribers don’t renew, then the campaign created initial value, not the more desirable durable kind.
New subscriptions и renewals are metrics that offer different insights. One shows data for the first conversion. The other shows retention and continued value.
Monthly vs Annual Cycles
Since monthly subscribers reach renewal opportunities more quickly than annual subscribers, comparing results between the right cohort is crucial. Annual plans may generate more revenue upfront, but their first renewal won’t be visible for long. It can make same-day or same-window comparisons tricky. It follows that the subscription plan mix, billing cycles, and cohort age should all play their part before a campaign winner is decided.

Cancellation vs Churn
It’s possible for a subscriber to cancel an auto-renewal and still retain access until the end of their trial period. The cancellation signals an intention not to continue, but not a monetary loss quite yet. It’s only once the subscription cancellation period is over that user will churn. On the other hand, subscription churn describes the actual loss of an active subscriber or recurring revenue.
Separating cancellation, expiration, failed payments, grace periods, and churn makes it easier to understand what happened where in the lifecycle and why.
Subscription Data vs Acquisition Data
Subscription platforms and app stores hold valuable information about purchases, plans, and subscriber status. Next come channels or ad networks who provide campaign delivery and cost data. But, without accurate attribution teams can’t connect campaigns to subscribers.
This gap often leads to optimization based on many vanity signals we’ve covered above (trial volume or low-cost installs). Using an MMP with native subscription reporting coupled with integrations from subscription platforms (RevenueCat and Adapty) removes that disconnect, helping you prioritize which campaigns drive subscriber LTV.
Why You Need Subscription Attribution
The gap present in subscription versus acquisition data highlights attribution adds the acquisition context needed to make campaign decisions.
Consider two campaigns:
- Campaign A generates more installs and more trials at a lower cost.
- Campaign B generates fewer trials, but more paid subscriptions and stronger renewal revenue.
If the team looks only at CPI or trial volume, Campaign A appears stronger. If it connects subscription events and revenue to the original acquisition source, Campaign B looks better for a long-term return.
An MMP connects the downstream subscription lifecycle to the campaign, channel, and cost data that brought the user into the app. UA teams have the opportunity to ask more questions:
- Which campaigns drive trials that become paid subscriptions?
- Which sources acquire subscribers who renew?
- Are cancellations concentrated in a particular campaign or Product ID?
- Which markets generate the most new and renewal revenue?
- Does subscriber value justify the cost of acquisition?
- Which campaign creates the strongest subscription ROAS and LTV?
How to Measure App Subscription Revenue by Campaign
1. Connect Acquisition to the User
Start with install attribution. The acquisition source, campaign, and other available dimensions create the foundation for following later subscription events back to the activity that brought the user in.
2. Capture the Full Subscription Lifecycle
Measure more than the first payment. A useful subscription view includes trials, first-time paid subscriptions, renewals, cancellations, new revenue, and renewal revenue.
3. Compare Cohorts Over an Appropriate Window
Give each cohort enough time to reach the event you are evaluating. Trial conversion depends on trial length. Renewal performance depends on billing interval. LTV needs time to develop.
Comparing cohorts at equivalent stages prevents a newer campaign from appearing weaker simply because its subscribers have not yet had the opportunity to renew.
4. Break Performance Down by Product ID
Counts alone can hide differences in plan mix. Product-level reporting helps show which campaigns drive monthly, annual, premium, discounted, or other subscription products.
5. Use a Consistent Revenue Basis
Decide whether the team is comparing gross revenue or proceeds and how taxes and store fees are treated. Apply that basis consistently across sources and tools. Otherwise, apparent campaign differences may come from reporting configuration rather than subscriber behavior.
6. Optimize for Downstream Value
Use early metrics to monitor campaigns, but make budget decisions with later outcomes in mind. Trial volume can guide initial investigation. New subscriptions show first conversion. Renewals, renewal revenue, and subscriber LTV show whether the acquisition continues to create value.
Native App Subscription Reporting in Tenjin
In 2026, Tenjin introduced native iOS Subscription Revenue Reporting. It connects subscription performance directly to the attribution, spend, and user acquisition data already available in Tenjin.
The report includes:
- Новые испытания
- Новые подписки
- New Subscription Revenue
- Продление
- Renewal Revenue
- Отмена бронирования
- All Subscriptions Revenue
Teams can break these metrics down by campaign, ad network, country, Product ID, and other reporting dimensions. That makes it possible to compare the cost of acquiring a subscriber with the revenue that user creates over time.
Native Subscription Revenue Reporting is included on every Tenjin plan, with no separate add-on or premium feature tier. The native report is currently available for iOS, with Android support next. Setup requires App Store Connect credentials and the latest Tenjin SDK. Full implementation steps are available in the Subscription Revenue documentation.
Already using RevenueCat or Adapty? You can keep your existing subscription setup and bring supported subscription events into Tenjin for campaign-level analysis. Tenjin’s third-party purchase integration guide lists the supported platforms and setup resources.
Native reporting and third-party integrations serve complementary needs. Tenjin’s native report provides standardized subscription revenue metrics within the MMP, while integrations give teams continuity with the subscription tools already in their stack.
Best Practices for App Subscriptions
Match the Ad Promise to the Subscription Experience
The audience, creative, onboarding, and paywall should make the same value proposition. A campaign can generate many trials and still create high cancellations if the experience after install does not match what the ad promised.
Treat Trials as an Early Indicator
Trial starts are useful for early campaign feedback, but they should not become the final optimization goal. Follow each cohort through first payment, renewal, and revenue.
Separate Subscriber Count from Value
Two campaigns can generate the same number of subscriptions and very different revenue. Compare New Subscription Revenue, Renewal Revenue, and Product ID before scaling based on volume alone.
Compare Equivalent Cohorts
Use the same acquisition window and allow each cohort the same amount of time to reach conversion and renewal opportunities. This is especially important when campaigns attract a different mix of monthly and annual plans.
Investigate Cancellations by Acquisition Source
A cancellation is not proof that a campaign is bad, but a concentration of cancellations can reveal a mismatch between the audience, creative, offer, or product experience. Use it as a signal for investigation.
Let Renewal Revenue Influence Budget Decisions
The cheapest new subscriber is not always the most profitable subscriber. A higher acquisition cost can be reasonable when users renew more consistently and create greater lifetime value.
Часто задаваемые вопросы?
An app subscription is a recurring payment that gives a user continued access to an app’s content, features, or services for a weekly, monthly, annual, or other billing period. It usually renews until the user cancels or payment fails.
App subscriptions create revenue through first-time payments and later renewals. New Subscription Revenue shows the value of first paid subscriptions. Renewal Revenue shows the value created when existing subscribers continue paying.
Yes. A subscription is one type of in-app purchase. Unlike a consumable purchase or a permanent feature unlock, it provides access for a defined period and can renew.
A new subscription is the first paid subscription for a user. A renewal occurs when an existing subscription continues into another paid billing period. The first measures initial paid conversion; the second measures continued value.
Cancellation usually records the decision not to renew. The subscriber may still have access until the paid period ends. Churn occurs when the subscriber or recurring revenue is actually lost.
Start with New Trials, New Subscriptions, New Subscription Revenue, Renewals, Renewal Revenue, Cancellations, and All Subscriptions Revenue. Analyze them by campaign, source, country, acquisition date, and Product ID to understand acquisition quality. View our article on the most important subscription metrics to track.
An MMP attributes the install to an acquisition source, then connects later subscription events and revenue to that original campaign. This allows teams to compare subscriber value with campaign cost, ROAS, and LTV.
