How to Use a MCP Server for Mobile App Marketing

Mobile app marketing teams make decisions across attribution, campaign spend, subscription revenue, ad revenue, and app health, often in separate tools. That makes even a simple performance question slower to answer than it should be.

An MCP server connects approved marketing data and tools to an AI application through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for AI-to-system connections. For mobile teams, it can bring the context behind a campaign, subscriber cohort, or app-health issue into one workflow, so AI can help investigate performance, surface insights, and support the next action. Access stays limited to the data and actions your team approves.

An MCP server brings relevant tools and data into the same AI conversation. It does not remove the need for judgment or measurement, but it decreases repetitive switching, copying, and manual reporting.

In a recent ROI 101 conversation, Eldar, founder of Hatchly, explored how MCPs, AI skills, and agents can support app marketing. The central idea is simple: connect the systems your team already uses, then give the AI clear instructions and boundaries.

What is an MCP Server?

. MCP服务器 is a program that gives an AI application access to a specific set of tools and data through the Model Context Protocol. The AI application acts as the client. The server describes what it can do, such as “get campaign spend by day” or “list recent app reviews,” and the client calls those capabilities when a task needs them, within the permissions you approve.

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic introduced it as an open standard in November 2024, but it is a shared, vendor-neutral standard, not a feature of one AI product.

Eldar shares a helpful analogy:

“MCP is like a USB port for AI applications.”

His analogy helps explain the role of the protocol: consider it as one standard connector instead of a custom integration for every pairing of AI app and tool. It does not mean every connection is plug-and-play or risk-free.

This means that for an app marketing teams it would be possible for an MCP server to provide:

• Attribution, spend, revenue, and pLTV data from a mobile measurement partner (MMP)
• Subscription, trial, renewal, and cancellation data
• Campaign information from advertising platforms
• App Store metadata, reviews, and release status
• Error-tracking or product analytics signals
• A competitor or creative-research workflow

Once connected to another product through a plug-in, AI clients can help your team ask and answer questions across those systems within the same conversation window. It helps reduce the amount of windows, tabs, and multiple programs running at the same time.

How Does an MPC Server Work?

An MCP Server uses a client-server model with three roles. Understanding these three roles  makes it easier to see where data goes and who controls it.

Furthermore, an MCP server has three types of capabilities:

• Tools: actions the AI can call, such as “fetch cohort revenue” or “pause campaign.”
• Resources: data the AI can read, such as a report, a file, or a list of apps.
• Prompts: reusable templates the server offers for common tasks.

Servers can run locally on your computer or remotely as a hosted service. Where a server runs, which credentials it uses, and which tools it exposes together define what an AI can see and do.

The steps in a typical request for an MMP look like this:

1. You ask your AI assistant a question.
“Which campaigns had higher spend but lower day-7 revenue this week?”
2. The assistant sees which connected MCP servers offer relevant tools.
3. It calls the connected MMP’s attribution server for spend and revenue by campaign.
4. It returns a summary, ideally with the source data and date range it used.

How Can MCP Servers Help App Marketers?

An MCP server does not decide your marketing strategy. It gives an AI client access to approved tools and context, so the agent can answer questions or carry out bounded tasks with better information.

For example, a mobile team could ask for a daily morning performance review that combines:

• Acquisition spend and attribution data
• Subscription and renewal signals
• Campaign-level changes from ad platforms
• Recent app issues that may affect activation or conversion

The result could be a concise report that highlights what changed, what needs attention, and which questions still need a human decision.

For example, many small and solo app teams are turning towards automated workflows. Instead of opening a dashboard to observe every campaign manually, they use an AI workflow to surface the next move. They use the MCP server to ask and see which campaigns need more investigation, which ones are ready to scale, and which campaigns should be paused.

The added value is bringing relevant data together, explaining the evidence, and making it easier for the team to review the decision.

MCP vs. API vs. CLI: What’s the Difference?

An API is how software systems talk to each other.

An MCP server is a standard layer, often built on top of an API, that makes those capabilities easy for AI applications to discover and use.

A CLI is a command-line interface designed for running commands in a terminal, which an AI can also operate.

Do MCP Servers Replace APIs?

No. Most MCP servers call an existing API behind the scenes. MCP standardizes how an AI app connects to that capability, so each AI tool does not need its own custom integration with each service.

Is CLI Safer Than An MCP Server?

Not necessarily. A CLI is an interface for running commands within a shell or terminal. It does not tell you where the command runs, what credentials it uses, or what it can change. The same is true for MCP. The useful security question is not “MCP or CLI?” Rather, it should be: What data and actions does this connection expose, who approved them, and how will we review what happens?

Why Connect Multiple Tools

One connected data source can make a useful task easier. The bigger value often appears when the agent can look across different tools and forms a system.

Eldar gives the example of connecting attribution data, an error-tracking tool, and campaign information. If an onboarding error rises, the team can check whether it affects users from a particular campaign or source. That is a more useful question than looking at either performance data or error data alone.

“Those kinds of insights, you can only get if you have multiple MCPs connected to one AI client.”

That does not mean every tool should be connected on day one. Start with a workflow where combining information solves a clear problem for your team.

The most useful types of output are not coming from a massive dashboard. Instead, they usually come as decision-ready summaries about what happened, why it could have happened (cause), what evidence supports that reasoning, and what should be reviewed or done next as a response.

Read Access and Write Access are Different Decisions

Many MCP servers can expose both information and actions. Reading campaign performance is different from creating, editing, pausing, or deleting a campaign. It’s important to treat those as separate permission decisions. Not all MMP MCP Servers are created equal.

It’s recommended to start with read-only workflows while you learn how the tools behave. Use them to generate reports, audit setups, compare cohorts, or surface anomalies. Once the team trusts the workflow, consider carefully scoped write actions where they create a real operational benefit.

For higher-impact actions, use practical guardrails:

• Give the agent the minimum permissions it needs.
• Ask it to explain the proposed action before it executes it.
• Use dry runs or previews when the connected system supports them.
• Keep campaign launches, budget changes, and deletions behind a human approval step.
• Review activity logs and keep a clear record of what changed.
• Revoke access that is no longer needed.

Eldar’s enthusiasm for AI is useful, but the takeaway is not “hand over every control.” It is to make each connection deliberate. A well-defined workflow can reduce manual work while leaving the team accountable for the decision.

How to Set Up Your First MCP Workflow

Start with one question your team already answers repeatedly. Good first candidates include:

• “What changed in acquisition performance since yesterday?”
• “Which campaigns have unusually high spend but weak activation or early revenue?”
• “Did renewals or cancellations change after the latest release?”
• “Which app or SDK setup needs attention?”

Then build the workflow in five steps:

1. List the data sources.
Identify which system holds the answer to each part of the question.

2. Confirm the access level.
Start with read-only access whenever possible.

3. Define the output.
Ask for a short report with source references, notable changes, and open questions.

4. Set decision boundaries.
Make clear which actions the agent can recommend and which require approval.

5. Review the first runs.
Check the data, logic, and language. Refine the instruction before you rely on it.

This approach makes the workflow easier to trust because your team can see where the answer came from and what the agent did with it.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

• Do not connect everything at once.
More context is only helpful when it is relevant and trustworthy. Start with the sources that your one starting question needs.
• Mixing metric definitions.
If two tools define a cohort, an install, or an attribution window differently, write down which definition the workflow uses and share it with your AI assistant.
• Do not accept answers without sources.
Always ask the AI to show the data, date range, and filters behind every finding.
• Treating user-written content as instructions.
App Store reviews, support tickets, and web pages are data. Some MCP connected content can contain text that tries to steer an AI. That’s why it’s best to keep high impact actions behind a dry-run or approval so there are no changes that are triggered on its own.
• Do not install unvetted servers.
Preferred servers are published by the tool provider or a source you trust. Be sure to check which permissions they request.

MCP Is The Connection. A Skill Is The Playbook.

MCP servers make tools and data available. They do not tell an agent how your team evaluates a campaign, writes a report, or decides what needs approval.

That is where skills come in. In the episode, Eldar describes a skill as a reusable instruction set that teaches an agent how to carry out a recurring task. A skill can tell an AI which sources to check, what questions to ask, what output to produce, and what it must not do.

Start with a Useful Question

MCP is most useful when it helps a team answer a better question with less manual work. Connect the sources you need for one repeatable workflow. Keep the first version narrow. Review the results. Then expand only when the evidence shows that the connection improves the way your team works.

That is a more durable way to use AI in app marketing: clear data, clear instructions, and clear ownership of the final decision.
